Trócaire
Trócaire – Working for a Just World
‘Trócaire’ means ‘mercy’ or ‘compassion’ in Irish gaelic. The agency was set up in 1973 to fight poverty and injustice in the developing world (formerly known as the Third World).
I’ve worked with Trócaire since 1995, in nine different jobs, including three departmental restructurings, two leaves of absence and one maternity leave. It’s a wonder they still want to keep me on the payroll!
Seriously, though, I love working for Trócaire. At the end of the day – and some days can be really tough – you can go home and think well, maybe somewhere in the world, my work made a difference to someone. Our corporate mission is to build a better world, not something meaningless like meeting random sales targets.
I’ve been to Rwanda, Honduras and Guatemala, and seen the realities of life in the developing world. It really makes you challenge how you live your life; by comparison, we live lives of luxury. Electricity, running water, school, nourising food… things we take for granted.
